A Russian YouTuber has managed to double the VRAM capacity of NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card. YouTuber did this by replacing the 8 GB VRAM in the video card with 16 GB VRAM.

NVIDIA‘s GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card is quite powerful and quite adequate for gamers. Better is always possible, of course, and a YouTuber named VIK-on also started with this idea; doubling the VRAM capacity of the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card .

Russian Youtuber named VIK-on installed Samsung’s 16 GB GDDR6 memory on the GeForce RTX 2070 graphics card; with 8 GB GDDR6 Micron memory and doubled the VRAM capacity of the graphics card. He also published his transaction on his YouTube channel.

YouTuber says the idea to double the VRAM capacity of the graphics card started with the RTX 2070’s; resulting diagram with 16GB of VRAM support. When this information first came out a few years ago, it was claimed that NVIDIA was also working on this issue.

VIK-on begins the memory replacement process by first removing the Micron GDDR6 RAM; from the GeForce RTX 2070 with a hot air gun. Then it removes the resistors behind the RAM. The reason it removed these resistors is that the Samsung memory it will install is compatible with the Geforce RTX 2070 .

YouTuber then places 8 x 2 GB GDDR6 Samsung modules on the graphics card. These Samsung modules are bought on Aliexpress for a price of 15 thousand rubles. After these processes are taken care of, the booting process is done and 16 GB of VRAM capacity can be seen in the test with GPU-Z.

But of course not everything is so rosy because the graphics card cannot work stably under full load . Displaying oddities about clock speed, the video card gives crashes and black screen errors. It is thought that this may be due to errors in the soldering process or errors between the Samsung chip and firmware.
