The US-based technology giant Apple started to support 5G technology, which its competitors started to support about 2 years ago, with the iPhone 12 family for the first time, and it seems that the new 5G-powered iPhones have managed to convince Apple fans to upgrade their devices. According to data shared by global research and consulting firm Gartner, Apple has succeeded in dethroning Samsung with its iPhone 12 family.
According to Gartner, who shared the fourth quarter sales data, Apple managed to sell close to 80 million iPhones in the last quarter of last year and became the top selling smartphone in the 4th quarter, dominating 20.8 percent of the market. Samsung, the world’s most popular smartphone brand, sold nearly 8 million fewer devices than the previous year and ranked second after Apple with a 16.2 percent market share.

Although Apple managed to outpace Samsung in the fourth quarter, Samsung continues to be the best selling smartphone brand when we look at the year overall. Selling more than 250 million smartphones in 2020, Samsung is the industry leader with 18.8 percent market share.
Apple, on the other hand, ranks second with a market share of 14.8 percent with sales of 200 million. In a period of major decline, Huawei managed to sell more than 180 million smartphones throughout the year and became the third most popular smartphone brand in 2020 with a market share of 13.5 percent.
